Last year, Saturday the 17th of November at 11am a bunch of last minute dressed and majorly hungover girls jumped into our friend’s aunty minivan for the highly anticipated Spilt Milk and spent 45 minutes contemplating everything from our favourite artists to which boys we were hoping to see. Being in a massive group had us torn between wanting to see ‘YG’ at 8:30pm and then ‘RL Grime’ at 10pm on BasQuiaT stage or see ‘The Wombats’ at 8:45pm and ‘Peking Duk’ at 10pm on the Angove stage we decided to be spilt up into two groups and met up afterwards. For the majority of us, this was the first over 18’s music festival we’d ever been to and with the current speculation circling music festivals and drug tolerance we were surprised to find that there weren’t many barriers that prevented people from bring drugs in. For us, we didn’t treat Spilt milk as important as we would categorise ‘Splendour’ or ‘Listen out’, especially considering how disappointed we were that Childish Gambino couldn’t perform after sustaining an injury. We only stubbled across Spilt Milk a few days before seeing Allday perform at Canberra University the night before for only $20.

The first essential tip to remember when going to any event not just a music festival but is to establish a meeting point that everyone will be able to find and that’s most likely somewhere not crowded to have some visibility. Another important tip to remember is always stick with your partner and if you have to separate make sure you have a charged phone, I know it sounds very 1960’s mum but losing your group at a festival and your phone being dead can be quite scary and time wasting, this is why having a meet up point is crucial so that if you do get separated you have above all a place to meet.

As, we went out the night before we didn’t arrive at Spilt milk until around 12pm , this proved to be no problem and as soon as we got in we went straight to the toilets and then from the cloak room to the alcohol section to pay $14 for a cider, once we had established our meeting point we headed for Jack River at 1:40pm on Angove stage. She was my favourite day time act.

Coming close to 5pm, it became obvious that we needed food in our stomach in order not to have four hangry girls run ramped, the prices of food at festival is always ridiculous with one slice of pizza costing what would be the amount of a whole pizza outside the event never the less, there’s always a variety of food trucks my favourite being the ‘Chur Burger’.  I found it was cheap and fulfilling enough to keep me going until early hours of the morning when I needed the kebab shop. Another helpful hint is If you are investing $5-$10 into the cloak room a good opt is too bring yourself some packed lunch and sweets to keep your sugar levels high and save yourself some more money……….. for alcohol.

The atmosphere for the festival was generally positive with only a handful of people being taken out by security for intoxication, throughout the day chatter of ‘pill testing’ from fellow festival goers wondered into our conversation and we discovered that although the response to Groovin the Moo 2017 pill testing trial was optimistic, failure to introduce the pill testing trial at Spilt milk both in 2017 and 2018 highlighted the further issues that lay within the governments approach to minimising drug harm . Now the sole reason pill testing wasn’t utilized at Spilt milk in 2018 wasn’t purely on the ACT government but more with the attempted collaboration between Safety Testing Advisory Service (STA-SAFE) and Spilt milk organisers as the formal operational plans for pill testing was unable to be finalised in time, the territory government couldn’t find alternative off-site options in the short time period left. Despite this, drug use was still a majority favourite or essential in the music festival starter pack amongst young people and it became quite evident that although there were no safe mechanisms for pill testing , they were still being consumed in high quantities.

Overall, id highly recommend going to Spilt milk as I had an amazing time.
