Berlin experiment was an underground techno music event held at Civic in Sydney, the 17th of August 2019 the theme doctors and patients saw, us patients wear white to be easily identified by staff or the ‘doctors and nurses’ . This wasn’t a music festival however it was a music event and considering I had to travel and buy tickets for it we’ll count it. Plus, there are additional experiments on in late September and throughout November which might interest someone to go after reading this.

For those who are located in Wollongong and don’t have money to stay up there , our plan was to go to Berlin experiment then catch the next train back to Wollongong early in the morning, to save on accommodation and miss out on the 10am checkout.
I dragged my best friend Cait, Zane and Angles along for the ride and we met up with a few of our friends inside. The club’s layout was pretty confusing for me, but I feel like that was the vibe they were going for with the whole patients/hospital theme although there was only one dancing area over 3 levels and it was quite small for the 400 people, they allowed in. The price of drinks were as I expected in Sydney quite high something like $13 for a Redbull, $11 for double blacks , lucky I know how to pre.

Unfortunately, Berlin experiment held a room full of teenagers on various drugs that half their jaws were helping them get to the exit. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d seen an environment aside from music festivals or concerts that relied so heavily on drug consumption to enjoy the music. Of course, I’m not stereotyping by saying that everyone there was on drugs I’m just saying that in my experience with the different over 18+ events I’ve been to, including nightclubs this was the first one where the amount of people on drugs felt heightened because I’m accustomed to this type of environment I didn’t let it discourage me and we continued mission of trying to nicely push our way to the front.
I loved the music and the DJ’s showed diversity in playing to the theme of the night and the techno style. One area for improvement that I encountered whilst having to accompany my friend to the smoker’s area multiply times is that after shutting the upstairs smokers area off around 12pm, and forcing 100 something plus people sometimes into a small cramped outside area it got extremely claustrophobic and frustrating being engulfed by second hand smoke, I do understand that it was probably something out of their control or behind the scenes.
I would recommend going if techno music is your style of music, and you have $30 to spare, which is great value for an event that isn’t on every weekend.
The upcoming dates for the next Berlin Techno Experiment are
September 27th 28th
November 8th 9th
